Sauna Buying Guide

Choosing a sauna is easier than it looks. Work through these seven questions and you'll know exactly what fits your space. Still unsure? Request a free recommendation.
1. Indoor or outdoor?
Outdoor saunas (barrel, cabin and glass-front designs) become a backyard or cottage retreat and are built for Canadian winters. Indoor saunas fit a basement, bathroom or spare room and are ready to use year-round with no snow to clear.
2. How many people?
- 2 people: couples or solo use, smallest footprint
- 3–4 people: the most popular family size
- 5–6 people: room to lie down and to host friends
A slightly larger sauna gives more comfort, but takes a little longer to heat.
3. Barrel, cabin or modern cube?
- Barrel: round shape heats quickly and evenly; classic look
- Cabin: more headroom and space, often with a covered porch
- Modern cube (glass front): contemporary design that frames the view
4. Western Red Cedar or Eastern White Cedar?
Western Red Cedar (Dundalk and Pure Cube collections) has rich colour and a strong natural aroma. Eastern White Cedar (Canadian Timber collection) has a lighter look and offers great value. Both resist moisture and insulate well.
5. Electric or wood-burning heater?
Electric heaters are convenient and easy to control, and need a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Wood-burning heaters need no power, which suits cottages and off-grid sites, and give a traditional soft heat. Check local permit and fire-code rules for either option.
6. Site preparation
- A solid, level base: concrete pad, pavers or a framed deck
- Clearance around the sauna for airflow and maintenance
- Power run to the site for electric heaters
- Easy, safe access path, especially in winter
7. Add a cold plunge
Many owners pair their sauna with a cold plunge for the traditional hot-and-cold ritual: heat, cool, rest, repeat. Browse our cold plunge collection.
